Cosmos Music Acquires Historic Publishing Catalog and Launches Svenska Musikförlaget
Cosmos Music has acquired all publishing rights from Ehrlingförlagen, one of Sweden’s most significant music publishers, founded in 1952 by Thore Ehrling.
For over 70 years, the publisher has played a central role in Swedish musical history, with Thore’s sons Staffan and Björn - and, more recently, Björn’s wife Ewa Ehrling - playing a key role in shaping today’s music publishing landscape.
With this acquisition, the last major privately owned Swedish song catalog has changed hands. Unlike previous historic acquisitions of significant Swedish music catalogs, these rights will remain in Swedish ownership.
The catalog features many iconic names, including Jules Sylvain, perhaps Sweden’s most prolific film composer, known for Swedish classics such as “Med en enkel tulipan” and “Säg det i toner” (from the first Swedish sound film). Other notable figures include Stig Olin, who wrote the classic “En gång jag seglar i hamn,” and Ulf Peder Olrog, celebrated for his popular and humorous songs like “Samling vid pumpen” and “Bullfest,” as well as Lasse Dahlquist with hits such as “Oboy, Oboy, Oboy” and “Gå upp och pröva dina vingar.”
Additionally, the catalog includes Sven-Olof Sandberg, often called Sweden’s first schlager king, and Thore Ehrling, the big-band leader who shaped Swedish radio and dance music for decades. It also contains works by Karl Gerhard, the revue king whose satirical couplets left a lasting mark on Swedish entertainment - such as the timeless “Jag är ett bedårande barn av min tid” - and Karl Wehle, a prolific lyricist and translator of many schlager classics. The catalog further holds numerous Nordic rights to French, English, and especially American classics, including “Kansas City,” “Blueberry Hill,” “Living Doll,” “I Love You,” and “House of the Rising Sun.”
Artists who have recorded or performed songs from the catalog include Cornelis Vreeswijk, Ulla Billquist, Sigge Fürst, Zarah Leander, Harry Brandelius, Anita Lindblom, Lasse Dahlquist, Karl Gerhard, Sven-Bertil Taube, Alice Babs, Siw Malmkvist, Ann-Louise Hanson, Svante Thuresson, Anna Book, Agnetha Fältskog, and many more.
Along with the acquisition, Cosmos Music is launching Svenska Musikförlaget (www.svenskamusikforlaget.com), where users can easily listen to and license songs from the catalog.
“We are very proud to carry forward this legacy of popular music, revue, folk-song tradition, and Swedish standards. The acquisition is an important step in Cosmos’ strategy to build a world-class music catalog while continuing to preserve Sweden’s musical heritage, as we have done with our esteemed in-house label Amigo,” said Robert Litsén, CEO of Cosmos Music Group.
Björn and Staffan Ehrling, who ran the business for fifty years, commented:
“It feels very good to hand over the catalog to Cosmos, who share our view of music’s long-term value and significance. We are very happy knowing that the catalog is in safe hands.”
